RI President-elect Mark Daniel Maloney’s theme for 2019-20, Rotary Connects the World, asks Rotarians to strengthen the many ways that Rotary Connects the World, building the connections that allow talented, thoughtful, and generous people to unite and take meaningful action through Rotary service.

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month for Rotary.  There has been no time in our past that children in our schools have been in greater need.  Schools are turning to virtual learning, but kids must have computers and internet access.  Sadly, many families do not have the basics.  Schools fund what they can, but it never seems to be enough.
Rotary youth exchange — one of the many programs for youths and young adults that we celebrate this month — was my path into true engagement in Rotary. My wife, Susanne, and I began hosting exchange students soon after I joined, and the experience helped me go from simply being a member of my Rotary club to being a true Rotarian. Now Rotary Youth Exchange is a family tradition, and a strong one: Over the past 24 years, we have hosted 43 students!

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. It is one of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics and was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as Rotary International (RI) president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.

This simple yet powerful 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers. In fact, the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy.

Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways.
