Moving Jefferson County Toward Sustainable Living

Judith Alexander has lived in Jefferson County since 1979. She is self employed part time as a clinical social worker with a home based counseling practice for individuals, couples, and her favorite modality, groups.

Having found a sense of place in Jefferson County, early on, Judith has concerned herself as a volunteer with moving Jefferson County toward a capacity to embrace sustainable living practices. In 2006, as one of the founders of Local 2020, Jefferson County's Transition Town,  L2020 is part of a network of "life boat" organizations all around the globe that are embracing localization as a way to meet basic needs for the population living here - needs for food, energy, water, emergency preparedness, etc.

Right away, Judith embraced a special interest in our local food system. Starting with instigating community gardens in a number of neighborhoods, later, under Judith's leadership, Citizens for Local Food (CLF), one of the Action Groups of Local 2020, also conducted a two year long project with many volunteers completing a 50 page Farm Survey of our local farming scene.  Following the completion of the Farm Survey, CLF designed a new focus for the food focused concerns by starting our Local Food System Council.  Now in its 4th year, today's talk will describe the work of the Local Food System Council which has replaced Citizen's for Local Food as the food related Action Group of Local 2020.
