Why a School Levy?
Jan 21, 2021 12:00 PM
The Rotary Club of East Jefferson County will meet on Zoom video on Thursday, January 21st, 2020. Our speaker that day will be Dr David Engle, Acting Superintendent, Chimacum Schools, whose biography follows. We welcome visitors to our meeting! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Meet Dr. David Engle, Acting SuperintendentI retired as Port Townsend’s Superintendent of Schools in 2016. Prior to that leadership position, I have enjoyed a varied and challenging career as a classroom teacher, Fulbright Exchange teacher (UK), assistant principal (Meadowdale HS and Bellevue HS), principal (Interlake HS, Ballard HS and Squalicum HS), district administrator (Seattle Public Schools), superintendent (Nebraska and Washington) and educational consultant. I have worked with school systems around the world (UK, Russian, China, Japan, Nebraska, New Jersey, Washington etc.) and worked in the private sector, as well, with Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey. I have been married to Margaret for the past 50 years and have two very different, but accomplished adult children (attorney son, mountain/ski guide daughter). My mother and father have passed away; but their environmental activist legacies live on (my father was a Rails to Trails leader for many years and my mother was a highly respected and effective PNW environmental activist for many years…notably serving on the National Audubon Society’s Board of Directors for over 20 years). Since retiring, I have worked with a number of local districts as they plan for the future. I especially enjoy working with small, rural school districts. I look forward to working with the Chimacum community as we ‘re-open’ the schools for the new school year. It will be both a challenge and an adventure to launch this school year in these uncertain times! Academic history: University of Washington – BA Saint Martin’s University – MEd University of Puget Sound – Principal Certification Seattle Pacific University – Doctorate and Superintendent Certification Other Community roles: Port Townsend Rotary President, 2018-2019 Port Townsend School of the Arts Board Director, 2016-2018 Co-founder of the Port Townsend Cycle School, 2016-2018 Member, Trinity United Methodist Church (A Reconciling Congregation), 2012-Current |

Rotary Classification Talk
Jan 28, 2021 12:00 PM
This meeting will be conducted for Club members on Zoom video. The link will be provided via the Club newsletter. Rotary classification talks are a Rotarians way of introducing themselves to club members. Early in Rotary's 110 year history, members were classified by their occupation, and clubs limited the number of members of any one classification to obtain the widest possible range of members in a community. Today, Rotary Clubs retain the classification idea, but no longer restrict membership. Thus, a classification talk is a members way of introducing themselves to a new club, and providing insight into their areas of expertise and interest that could be of use and interest to other Club members. Rotary District 5020 Matters
Feb 04, 2021 12:00 PM
This meeting will be conducted on Zoom video. Please contact the Club via email >info@ejcrotary.club< for the link. Greg Horn is the District Governor of Rotary District 5020, which is one of the largest Rotary Districts in the world, encompassing 91 Rotary Clubs stretching from Vancouver Island, British Columbia south along the west side of the Puget Sopund over the Olympic Peninsula as far south as Woodland WA. Three things have shaped Greg Horn’s life more than any other: water, family and Rotary. Raised living on a lake in Lakewood, WA, he became an accomplished competitive water skier and barefooter. This led him into the water ski manufacturing business during college at the University of Washington. After college and a stint in the Navy, the job grew into a self employment opportunity as an independent manufacturer’s representative. That led him into the tournament ski boat business, a wakeboard manufacturing business and finally a dock building business. He also raced tunnel boats for several years way back in the 70's where he set a world speed record that still stands. Along the way he joined with some friends and built a water ski lake, one of the finest in the country. After joining Lakewood Rotary in 1996 he became active in just about every aspect of the club. 2009-2010 brought a year of being club president, and then three years as assistant governor followed. Greg and Mary were co-chairs of 2018 Rotary District 5020 Conference and Training in Tacoma. Mary is now Greg’s Chief of Staff. Greg’s four Rotary passions are polio eradication, public image, membership growth, and The Rotary Foundation. A final thought: Do you wish Rotary were not such a well-kept secret? Do you wish everyone in the community knew about all the life-changing things we do? Why not invite friends and family to join you online for a meeting and hopefully in person someday soon. It’s a great low key way to expose Rotary to others and let them see first hand the power of Rotary. Together we can open opportunities and grow Rotary! -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
