Karen Griffith, a past president of the East Jefferson County Rotary Club, and Chair of the Club's Local Grant Committee, recently announced the award of several grants to local groups.

The Community Chorus of Port Townsend was awarded a grant of $500.  This grant will defray costs of sending one person to Choral Conductors Workshop in Ocean Shore in late July.  They are in need of a new conductor.  A new conductor will impact the 105 member chorus, their family and friends and any attendees of their two-yearly concerts.

The Chimacum Backpacks for Kids program was awarded a grant of $600.  This organization’s goal is to fund food costs for children in the Chimacum schools who experience food insecurity.  During the summer months they provide 320 backpacks for children.  They have recently become a 501(c)3 organization and this grant will help defray the costs of that application so that no money donated to the cause will be diverted for that expense.

The Citizens for School Safety (CSS) program was awarded a grant of $1000  This program was started with seed money from the Rotary Club of East Jefferson County club in the light of school shootings across the nation.  A group of concerned citizens met together and decided one priority is to make the Chimacum Schools a safe harbor for “sheltering in place”.  With that in mind, 72-hour emergency food kits have been purchased for the students in the three Chimacum Schools.  This grant will allow CSS to complete the need for the Middle School of Chimacum.  Rotarian Z. Jack Randall has led the effort for this worthy cause.

The Local Grant Committee is chaired by Past President Karen Griffith and includes members Stephen Porter, Betsy Pentz, and Caleb Summerfelt.
